In 1999, Rod and Michelle Ball of Criation Meadows bought their first llamas and fell in love with their gentle curious nature. Llamas were the perfect fit for their family, as raising them is something the children could be a part of. They had found something the whole family could do together.
In 2001 Rod and Michelle bought a quarter section of pasture/hay land near Castor, Alberta, Canada to support their herd of over 35 animals. Since then, they have been kept busy haying, fencing, cleaning, renovating and caring for the llamas while raising the three children.
Our breeding goals focus on conformation. We prefer tall, stretchy llamas with silky or suri fibre, but we have all types available for sale. Our herdsires include Peruvian, Chilean and North American blood lines, and are available for outside breedings. We also have fibre and fibre products available for the fibre enthusiast.
Criation Meadows currently have three proven herdsires and two junior herdsires, which allow them to integrate and selectively cultivate Peruvian, Chilean and North American Blood lines in their herd.
Michelle, a registered nurse, finds herself quite busy raising their three children and caring for the llamas. Rodney splits his time between oilfield work, family, farm and the animals. Rod and Michelle also take every opportunity to learn more about these beautiful creatures by attending shows and conferences and by visiting other farms.
Their eldest child, Alyssa, frequently sets up llama obstacle courses and plays 'llama show'. Cody, their boy, wants to help with absolutely everything - even cleaning up manure piles. Tamara, their youngest, runs for her coat whenever there is the slightest mention of a baby llama. Llamas have been such an inspiritaion to Rod, Michelle and the children. They are the heart of Criation Meadows.
It would appear that the Ball family learns new things about these magnificent creatures daily. As their children grow, their keen interest and involvement with the llamas will also grow. They truly enjoy every aspect of raising them. According to Michelle, 'A friendly llama kiss just has a way of making your day.'
